As a war measure, and following last year's precedent, the lecture for 1941 was given on a Sunday morning—the date being March 23. The lecturer, Professor J. C. Flugel, D.Sc., was introduced by Professor G. W. Keeton, M A., LL.D., who had with him on the platform Miss Marjorie Bowen and Messrs. F. G Gould and S. O. Green. Considering the adverse conditions, there was a gratifyingly large audience that followed with closest attention Professor Flugel's address on "The Moral Paradox of Peace and War." This emphasized the radical changes, alike in national consciousness and in standards of individual conduct, effected by the outbreak of war; it sought to analyse the psychological appeal made by belligerency, and stressed the need of some other outlet than strife for the potent forces thus evoked - as, for instance, some concerted human effort to oppose the blind strength of an indifferent and hostile Nature. It was an invocation of reason against warfare that would surely have won the warm support of Dr. Conway himself.
In spite of war-time difflculties, some quite good walks were arranged during the spring and early summer. With the coming of intensive attacks from the air in August and September, and the shortened evenings, the programme was brought to an abrupt close. During the months of late autumn and winter, the very early black-out made it quite impracticable to start again. Rambles will be resumed this spring if possible.
